Brief Introduction

After independence, development of the rural sector was considered the primary concern of the Government of India and GBPUAT, Pantnagar was established in the year 1960, in collaboration with US universities included the universities of Tennessee, the Ohio State University, the Kansas State University, The University of Illinois, the Pennsylvania State University and the University of Missouri

The G.B. Pant University is a symbol of successful partnership between India and the United States. The establishment of this university brought about a revolution in agricultural education, research and extension. It paved the way for setting up of 31 other agricultural universities in the country.

The main campus lies in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand at 290 N latitude and 790 E longitude at an elevation of 243.8 m above the mean sea level. This main campus has the area responsibility for the entire Uttarakhand representing plains, Tarai, Bhabar and hill areas. However, to provide service to the hill region its other stations are situated at Ranichauri (Tehri district), Majhera (Nainital district) and at Lohaghat-Sui (Champavat district). There are 763 teachers and officers 59 technical staff, 631 administrative and ministerial personnel and 1425 class III employees, amounting to a total strength of 2878. The number of students in the University ranges between 4200-4400 and the teacher taught ratio is about 1:6.

Mission:

The University aims at reaching the remotest of the remote areas of its jurisdiction in order to cater to the needs of those requiring its services, and desiring participation in its programmes. The University commits itself to become a vital instrument for the socio-economic transformation of rural masses of Uttarakhand.

Creation of opportunities for quality education in Agriculture, Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Technology,

Home Science, Basic Science, Fishery Science, Business Management and Computer Application

programmes.

Generation of new techniques to improve the production and productivity of crops and livestock.

Providing the required expertise and assistance to the planning and development departments of the State.

Strengthening and improving the infrastructure for improving quality education and for conducting need based

research.

Strengthening and expanding the existing extension services for the development of rural areas of Uttarakhand.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with Australian institute i.e. Western Sydney University(WSU), Penrith, Australia and G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, India.
